An Exclusive Effigy of Karumadi Kuttan

Located at a distance of 3 km away from the east of Alleppey the serene hamlet of Karumadi
is renowned for its black granite statue of Lord Buddha which as the believe came into origin roughly during 9th to 10th century.


As per the history during 9th and 10th century Buddhism was the main religion of the place and the statue which is renowned as Karumadi Kuttan is the sole evidence of that incident. Although with the growing phase of time Buddhism was slowly overlapped by Hinduism but the relevance of the figurine has not lost its significance and to trace the same His Holiness the Dalai Lama made his way here during 1965 and worshiped the black quartz figurine.

As they say with the grounds of an effigy there are many legends associated with it and owing to its importance the site is managed and supervised by the archaeological department of the state to protect the site of the temple.

While you come make sure to witness the broken beauty of the statue as it is very unique and while compelling with the history they say elephant charged in towards the site of the statue and eventually run away with the right half of the statue. If you will see the figurine the take seems to be true because the broken brick of the statue although looks ill at ease but that’s what make this granite model different and exquisite.

When it comes to its name than one must understand that the statute derived its name from the place where it is located. Since it is under the roof of Karumadi the figurine is renowned as Karumadi Kuttan and the meaning of Kuttan is Malayalam is boy which in turn concludes that the boy is from Karumadi.
