Know About the Importance of Chittar River

Flowing down the gates of Southern State of India, Chittar River
is one of the prime rivers of Tamil Nadu. Its five tributaries cascading to meet with the flows of Chittar are something brilliant and such other tributaries and streams serves helping hand in making the source of Chittar River.

Originated from Courtallam hills of Tirunelveli District, Chittar is renowned for its irrigation importance. its major channels of stream like Tambaraparani River and the Manimuthar River guides along those wonderful twist and whirl which in turn creates an enigma of waterfalls which shimmers down to provide art of nature.

The word Chittar means beautiful so as per its etymology the river is defined as beautiful river of Tamil Nadu. At the same time it can be said that it is a valuable gift to the people living at a site of this district.

A stream that opines for natural scene of waterfalls is so splendid in its origin that people consider this falls with Spa Falls of Belgium. Courtalam hills which is settled at a height of 1750 meters above the sea level is a place from where these amazing river glides down to provide irrigation facility.

Talking about its meeting point it first meets the heights of   Aintharuviar and leads to connect the chief river which flows near Gajamajorpuram. Then it looks to connect with Govindar which in its turn links the line of Tenkasi town and connects the flow with Hanumanathi which is followed by Main River near the proximity of Veerakeralampudur village and the Aluthakanniar, Kadapagothi village and to Tenaksi Taluk completes the journey of River.

Chittar reservoir which connects the tourist with picturesque backdrop is one of the main tourist attractions of Tamil Nadu. Here people will not only witness the scenic background but they will have a chance to understand its importance.

But that’s just a natural point we talking about the main thing that Chittar reservoir has in its shore is that it helps to irrigate around 8903.27 hectares of land.

All the tributaries that help in making Chittar River have its own field of irrigation. Each of these splendid tributaries leads their course and provides necessary amount of water for irrigation process which in turn helps in making one of the greener sides of Tamil Nadu.

Each tributary has its own anicuts and each anicuts are shared within huge hectares of land and streams at their turn enrich the land with its flow and helps the irrigator to flourish their field.
Talking about its course first it settles in the slopes of Western Ghats then from its origin it climbs the route of six kilometres and then turns to north for 16 km before gliding into the eastern zone. The total length of the river is of 80 km and all the courses from where it glides to give plenty of resource for irrigation.


So this time around when you will pay visits here at Tamil Nadu make sure walk down here to witness Chittar reservoir and Chittar streams.
