Historic Pediments of Mala Jewish Synagogue and Its Importance

Miscellany of Jewish Settlement which is to be found at the streets of Mala is definitely one of the primary
attractions and it is guaranteed to attract any artistic mind. During an era of Jewish when they used to live in the streets of Mala the people here used to address the street with the name of Jews Street Mala. It was in 1948 when Israel Jews left their hood and started settling here and that led to the formation of Jewish community and Jewish architecture.

Grandeur of Mala Jewish Synagogue is definitely one of the splendours and masterpiece of their work and skill because within the doors of it you will witness exquisite carving which are done in various column and model. Beside that adjacent to the site of Mala Jewish community you will witness Jewish cemetery which reflects their love and the testimony and obituary of their ancestor.

As per the history and recorded documents Jewish began to migrate in Kerala in 72 AD and started working as a trading commuter. As per the beliefs there were 40 Jewish families who travelled here after the formation of Israel and according to history they were the first Jewish community to migrate within the shore of Kerala.

There was so much of influence of their settlement here they doubt even the word mala shares its association with Hebrew word which means centre of refugee.

Mala Jewish Synagogue
Settled within the junction of commercial streets, the chrome of yellow building with the customary upper windows glowing out from the core sanctuary speaks the volume of their culture and art. Vast stretch of building that covers the both lane of the shops where second level of complex looks to traverse the streets below is unusual method of structuring the site which generally depicts their style.

Unfortunately everything which was brought here from the Jewish family travelled home along with them and now all you can witness is untamed woman’s gallery and once you will look down from the height all you are going to witness is conked out roofs and its residual.

History of Mala Jewish Synagogue
Although there are no proper documents and evidence to trace when Jews started settling within the corner of Thrissur and when they established their first synagogue but the local people still recognised them as an active trader and shop owners.

 As per the accounts you can trace the incident of Prem Doss Swami Doss Yehudi, who prescribed regarding Jewish Malayalam folk song where he revealed the fact that woods which was used to structure complex was provided to Joseph Rabban in 1000 CE by the Rajah of Cranganore.

Furthermore Yehudi states that the real synagogue which was established in eleventh century was destroyed due to invalid reason and the new complex was stiffen up at 14th century which was again restored in 1792.

Current Status of Mala Jewish Synagogue
At present the doors of the Synagogue are under the authority of Panchayat and municipality and all the people are require to contact with the staff members to locate the Key in order to enter inside.

Prior to 1955 the Synagogue buildings were at its best but with the intervention of Municipality the grounds and the parts of the synagogue have been led to fragment there without any maintenance. Beside that it is even sad to hear the Tebah, Heckal and the furnishings and fittings were moved from there and now it is completely missing the only thing that conjures the faith is its balcony and second Tebah.

While with the growth of public interest regarding the importance of synagogue which reflects the history and its relation with kerala the humble restoration work was carried in late 2010 by the department of Municipality.

Mala Jewish Cemetery
Settled at the central residential area the gates of cemetery were handed over to the local panchayat on April 1, 1955 by the trustees whose names are carved outside that gate and it states that the cemetery gates operates under the lights of local authority. Primarily the site of the cemetery is divided into two sections and seeing its importance the court has declared the site not to be used as play field.

How to Reach
As it is located at the heart of the Mala town you can get an ample of bus that operates from private bus station which is located at a distance of 250 m from the synagogue.
