Home to the famed temple of Kaviyoor
Mahadevar devoted to Lord Shiva, Kaviyoor is a village placed on the western
bank of the Manimala River in Pathanmitta district of Gods Own Country Kerala.
This small hamlet is further popular for the Thirunelli Temple, Njaliyal
Bhagavathy Temple, Cave Temple and several churches. It is one of the 64 aged
old Brahmin settlements of Kerala and has been growing itself as a major
tourist destination owing to its large number of significant temples and
churches.

Kaviyoor
Mahadevar Temple: Popularly known as the Thrikkaviyoor Mahadeva Temple,
Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is one of the most significant temples devoted to Lord
Shiva. The prime deity of this temple is Lord Shiva, Mata Parwati and Lord
Hanuman. The temple is supposed to have been constructed around 10th
century and thus making it one of the ancient temples in modern Kerala. But the
sculptures of the temple dates the temple to the 17th century.
Standing on a small hillock, the
temple is constructed in a gable style of architecture with a perfect round
Sreekovil and a peculiar basement. The temple is further festooned with an 18
steps at the eastern entrance and a copper covered roof which makes it
exceptional in terms of architecture.
According to the legend, the main
deity of this temple was installed by Lord Rama himself on his return to his
kingdom Ayodhya in the presence of his wife Sita, Sugreeva, Vibheesan and Hanuman
in the Tretha Yoga after being victorious with the Lankan king Ravana.
The temple celebrates the birth
anniversary of Lord Hanuman (Hanuman Jayanthi) with great fervor and joy.
During the festival large number of devotees from varied parts of Kerala and
other states visit the temple with offerings to seek blessings from the god.
Cave Temple:
Protected
as a significant monument by the Archaeological Department, Cave temple also
known as Rock Cut Temple owing to the architecture of the temple which is built
by huge carving on a rock is one of the most important temples of Kerala. The
sculpture of Lord Ganapati (the elephant headed God) on the wall and the tall
Shivalinga (3 feet high) in the inner sanctum decorate the inner part of the
temple beautifully. This holy place also houses the idols of Dwarapalakas and
Maharishi.
The temple is built in a Pallava
style of architecture and was constructed during the rule of Pallava dynasty
(608 – 850 AD).

crowded with devotees throughout the year.
Best time to
Visit: October
to February is the best time to visit this place and if you want to relish the
great festivals of these temples then make sure to visit between the months of
December to January.
