Perched at
an elevation of 1890 meters above the sea level, Agasthyakoodam is the second
highest peak(koll)
in Kerala and is home to more than 2000 medicinal herbs. The peak is surrounded by Shola forests which gives it an enigmatic look and is a part of the Agastya Mala Biosphere reserve which is placed on the border of Indian state of Tamil Nadu and Kerala whereas the peak is positioned in Gods own Country Kerala.

Flora: Out
of the 2000 medicinal herbs found in this place 50 are endangered.
‘Arogyapacha’ is one of the very important medicinal herbs that are found in
this place and is used for the eternal health. Another important plant found in
the vicinity of this place is the Neelakurunji flower which blossoms in every
12 years. The flower is found only in two places of Kerala and Agastya Koodam
being one.
Things to
do: Abundant of activities are available for the visitors to indulge while in
this place.
Faunas like
leopard, sloth bear, wild boar, spotted dear, Malabar spiny dormouse, bonnet
macaque, wild dog, rats; porcupine, jungle cat, elephants and tigers can be
spotted in this place. You can also visit the Agasthya Vanam Biological Park
which was established with an intention of protecting the degraded
forests.
Trekking is
one of the major activities of this abode and can be best enjoyed during the
months of December to April. The luscious greenery and the enchanting views
from the top of the mountain is truly captivating and a feast to the eyes.
Bonacaud is the place from where you have to commence the trekking journey.
It is
believed that Sage Agastya (Considered to be one of the Saptarishi of Hindu
Puranas) spend his time meditating in this place because of which large numbers
of devotees trek to the peak with all their effort to worship the idol of the
sage which is placed at the top of the hill.
Note: No
one is allowed to enter the forests after the months of May.
Travel Tips:
Ø Forest
pass has to be obtained from the wildlife warden in Trivandrum.
Ø It
is advisable not to trek for ladies as per the security reasons.
Ø The
level of trek difficulty is moderate.
Ø You
must carry the basic essentials: backpack, water, first aid kit, energy food,
snacks etc.
How to
reach: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the
nearest airport which is connected to flights from major Indian cities and
number of foreign countries. The nearest railway station is also located in
Thiruvananthapuram, trains from various parts of India halt to this railway
station. From the airport and railway station one can lease vehicles to reach
Bonacaud from where you can start trekking.
