Ramakkal Medu

Famed for the strong winds and a wandering view point, Ramakkal Medu is a stunning hill station
and a hamlet in the Idukki district of Gods own Country Kerala and is positioned on the border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. 


The name Ramakkal Medu means Rama’s foot imprints, according to Hindu Mythology Lord Rama set his foot on this rock while searching for his wife Sita who was kidnapped by the Lanka king Ravana. This area is gratified with striking natural beauty all over surrounded by greeneries and azure blue sky above making it perfect for spending a couple of hours time in the lap of earthy nature.

The undying and spontaneous beauty of this place has magnetized many travelers from across the globe and among them is popular Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio who stated this place as a paradise on earth. Truly, this place is just a paradise where one can see the earthy beauty of nature.

Wind Factor: The wind that blows in here has been recorded as the maximum in entire Asia. Throughout the year irrespective of time and season the wind blows here at a speed of 35 km per hour making this place a heavenly paradise for the speed wind lovers.

Blessed by uninterrupted and high speed of wind, various wind mills are set up by the Government of Kerala and the capacity is about 12.5 mega watt. This place is the second in Kerala where a wind energy farm is installed.

Splendid View: Standing at a height of 3500 feet above sea level in the Western Ghats, this place is famed for providing a bird’s eye view to the visitors of Kattappana in Kerala on one side and Kambamnaadu villages in Tamil Nadu on the other. According to the locals, one can get an opportunity to witness 6 main towns of Tamil Nadu and also some places of Kerala. 

The sceneries that one can see from the top of the hill in this place are promisingly hard to describe for any of the visitors and for that one should visit this place on his/her own. It is suggested to avoid going near to the cliffs which can be dangerous.

Kuruvan and Kuruthi: Placed at the top of one of the hills in this place, Kuruvan and Kuruthi is a 40 feet statue of the historic tribal people who are supposed to have found the place for the Idukki dam. It was constructed by sculptor CB Jinan. 

One can either park below or drive up to the hill to witness this amazing and gigantic statue. Today, the hill is famed as Kuruvan and Kuruthi Hill. Emerald carpet below and clear blue sky in this place is sure to grab a moment of your life while visiting this topmost attraction of Ramakkal Medu.     


How to Reach: The nearest airport to this place is at Madurai (145 km) and Ernakulam (185 km) whereas Changanacherry (90 km) and Kottayam (150 km) are the nearest railway stations. One can get buses and taxis from Kumily (36 km North), Kattappana and Nedumkandam. You can also reach this place by renting a taxi from Kumily via Chellarkovil.
